Laser engravings and cut-outs from plywood

Our basic line of products are various cut-outs from 3 mm birch plywood. They are mostly items for promotional prints, such as keychains, hangers, puzzles, various shapes and objects: phone stands, boxes, 3D puzzles, etc.

Commemorative decorations from plywood

Another line of our products are commemorative and holiday decorations, as well as daily use products for decorating by means of decoupage, painting, drawing, pyrography, engraving, or printing. All elements are double-polished after cutting which makes them immediately ready for further embellishment.

Design preparation, technology description and the properties of plywood

If an object can be drawn in 2D using vector lines, we are able to transform it into a cut-out. This creates virtually endless possibilities, from small shapes measuring 1 x 1 cm, up to big 150 x 150 cm wall decorations. Vectors are mathematical curves creating a drawing, which allow for shrinking and enlarging the design with no loss of detail or quality.

We have access to a database of approximately 3000 projects. We can also try to automatically trace a project based on a profile/silhouette image in monochrome.

Sometimes it is possible to copy elements using an A4 scanner and a sheet of coloured paper as the background.

The drawing can be made in any graphic program with a vector graphics functionality. It is not recommended to use a filling tool or vary the line thickness - the program interpreting the drawing for the laser cutter will not register these differences. The only necessary information is the path of the cutting edge.

Too many details in a small area can lead to the plywood getting burned. The drawing of small elements can be printed on a regular printer - this will help locate the elements that are too delicate and may end up burned.

An example of this is dog fur and other similar thin elements (whiskers, feathers, unique hairs, etc.)

Too many cut lines in a small area can create unappealing burn marks and significantly downgrade the quality of the details, making them unrecognisable.

The drawing features this effect on 5 cm elements - scaling it up to 10 cm would resolve the issue.

In the case of designing a small element, the number of details needs to be limited.

Why laser cutting is a better way of working in plywood than milling

Working in plywood using a laser is preferable for plywood sheets between 3 and 8 mm of thickness. This method is faster, more precise and allows for more details in comparison to the CNC machine milling.

During the milling process, the plywood needs to be fixed to the table, and some of the details can be torn off or misplaced. Another issue is the width of the cuts; the narrowest milling cuts are 1 mm in diameter but the process is extremely time-consuming. Laser cuts allow for rapid, precise and safe cuts in the plywood surface, with the cutting line below 0.1 mm of width.

For thicker materials (over 8 mm) and less complex designs, CNC milling is the faster and better cutting method.

Engraving of wooden products

We offer laser engraving of plywood and other wooden or wood-like elements. Our offer includes around 350 models of boxes and other wooden products. The maximum surface of the engraving is 80 x 60 cm, while the height of the product should not exceed 30 cm.

We have previously engraved 45 and 58 mm beads from our collection and can also engrave beads of other diameters (without holes only). The full assortment of bead diameters are 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 16mm, 18mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 35mm, 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and 58mm

Drawings for engraving are best prepared as vector graphics. For a more detailed description of the preparation process, see here: <link>

Photographs or .jpg or .bmp graphics should be first converted into 2-bit bmp graphics. While we offer software for such conversion, the graphics are not always processed successfully.

Plywood is a sturdy and versatile wood-like material.

It consists of layers of wood veneer stuck together to set the fibres between layers at a 90 degrees angle. This makes plywood not only durable, but also elastic. Small thicknesses, such as 3, 4, or sometimes 5 mm have only 3 layers of veneer.

Since one side of the plywood sheet tends to be more flexible than the other, this needs to be taken into consideration while designing larger elements. This is also a major advantage of plywood while designing bent elements.

The one inner and two outer layers that we see are usually higher class veneers.

The plywood used in our products is the 3 mm birch plywood of the highest class available on the market. After cutting, the plywood is polished to reduce soot which results in the target cut out of roughly 2.7-3 mm thickness.

How does the laser cutter work?

The laser cutter working surface consists of two mobile axes. The X axis is the so-called gate. Mounted on it is a moving cutting head with a lens and the final mirror of the setup that directs the laser towards the lens and the worktable. Also located on the gate is another, fixed mirror on one of the gate's ends, moving along with the entire gate arm along the Y axis. The third fixed mirror is located next to the laser source, directing the laser beam towards the second mirror.

Laser cutters commonly use a moving table known as the Z axis. This helps setting up the focal length for the best cutting and engraving results.

One of our machines, with a work table size 100 x 60 cm, has the ability to have it lowered by 30 cm, which allows for engraving and cutting not just plywood but also wooden objects, such as box lids and various promotional products made out of wood and other materials. Our latest works include ECO beads and various certificates.

Another machine is suited only for working with 3mm plywood. The table is immobile, with just the cutting head manually adjustable to the material thickness. The working space of this machine is 160 x 160 cm, with usable space of 150 x 150 cm, which is the standard size of a single sheet of plywood.

The third machine is equipped with an immobile table as well, but its cutting head is automatically regulated. Thanks to that, it can cut plywood of various thicknesses. It is also suitable for cutting markings and drawings, similar to working with a pyrography tool. There is no possibility to create engravings as such.
